Waists
Pants, skirts and dresses that gape, sit low or feel too tight may be adjusted through the side seams, centre back or waistband, depending on the construction.
Taking in & letting out · Canning Vale · Perth
Loose through the waist, gaping at the back, too snug across the hips or sitting incorrectly through the shoulders — careful resizing can change how the whole garment feels and falls.
Taking in versus letting out
Removing excess fabric is generally more flexible than creating extra room that may not exist inside the seams.
Sometimes a garment is the right length and the wrong everything else. It may sit loose through the waist, gape at the back, pull across the hips or have straps and shoulders that were never quite sized for you. That is taking in and letting out territory, and it makes up a large part of the work that comes through our Canning Vale studio.
Bodies change. Weight can shift, be lost, be gained and settle differently over time. A garment does not adjust on its own, but in many cases its fit can be improved. Something bought a size up “to be safe”, an inherited dress that almost fits, or favourite pants that have become loose may all be more workable than they first appear.
Taking a garment in usually follows existing seams, darts or shaping lines. There is often flexibility, although there comes a point where a major reduction changes the garment's original proportions.
Letting out is more limited. It depends on spare fabric in the seam allowance, and many modern garments are made with very little. Sometimes the honest answer is that only a small amount is possible, or that the garment cannot be let out cleanly at all. We would rather explain that before starting than promise a result the garment cannot support.
What we take in and let out
The best result usually comes from considering how each altered area affects the shape and balance around it.
Pants, skirts and dresses that gape, sit low or feel too tight may be adjusted through the side seams, centre back or waistband, depending on the construction.
Shoulder alterations are more involved because they affect the way the entire garment hangs. We assess armholes, sleeves, neckline and structure before recommending the work.
Common on pants, dresses and fitted skirts. More than one seam may need adjustment to keep the fit even and preserve the original line.
Gaping at the back can often be improved, although the method depends on the darts, neckline, lining and how the garment is built.
Straps that sit too wide, gaping under the arm and shoulder seams in the wrong position are common issues that may be corrected after a proper fitting.
What is realistic and what depends on the garment
Construction, lining, seam allowance, fabric behaviour and the size of the change all determine what can be achieved cleanly.
| Adjustment | Usually possible? | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Taking in a waist | Yes | Straightforward on most garments, subject to pockets and waistband construction. |
| Taking in bust or hips | Usually | Construction, darts, lining and maintaining the garment's proportions. |
| Letting out a waist | Sometimes | The amount and condition of usable seam allowance. |
| Letting out bust or hips | Sometimes | Available seam allowance, fabric marks, lining and how the material behaves. |
| Major resizing by several sizes | Rarely straightforward | Whether the original proportions can be preserved; alternatives may be more practical. |
Getting an accurate fitting
A few details at the fitting help us judge the correct amount of room and the way the garment should sit.
Wear the usual undergarments: Shapewear, bras and layers can noticeably change the fit of a structured or close-fitting garment.
Bring the right shoes: For dresses and longer garments, heel height can affect posture, balance and the way fabric falls.
Mention expected size changes: If your measurements may change again soon, tell us. Some garments allow a little flexibility in how the alteration is planned.
Stand naturally: The most reliable fitting comes from your normal posture rather than holding or pulling the garment into position.
How it works
For taking in or letting out, seeing the garment on your body is usually more useful than a photo because the fit is personal to you.
We inspect seams, darts, lining and the fabric available inside before confirming what can be adjusted.
We explain what is achievable, what may affect the result and when a requested change is not realistic.
Larger or structured adjustments may require an interim fitting so the balance can be checked before the garment is finished.
Why locals choose us
We explain when letting out is limited by the available seam allowance before any work begins.
Waist, bust, hip and shoulder changes are considered together so one adjustment does not create another fit issue.
Lined dresses and detailed pieces are assessed as complete garments rather than isolated seams.

Common questions
Most garments can be taken in within reason. The practical limit depends on the original cut, seams, pockets, lining and how much the proportions would change.
Not always. Letting out depends on the amount of usable fabric left inside the existing seam allowances and whether the fabric can be released without leaving visible marks.
Bring it in for assessment, or message us on WhatsApp with the key details. An in-person fitting is still the best way to confirm what is achievable.
Often, yes. The solution depends on the darts, neckline, lining and overall construction, but back gaping is a common alteration request.
Only as much usable fabric as the maker left in the seams. Some garments have a few centimetres available, while others have almost none.
Sometimes. Larger reductions can change the original proportions, dart placement, neckline, armholes and balance of the dress, so we assess the full garment before recommending the work.
Timing depends on the garment, the number of areas being adjusted and our current workload. Straightforward waist alterations are generally less involved than lined pieces or major resizing. Tell us early if you have a deadline.
