Why formal dresses takes more time
The outside of the dress is only part of the job.
Wedding and formal dresses often contain several layers and structural details that need to be adjusted together.
Formal and wedding dresses are not like everyday clothes, and we do not treat them that way. There is usually one date when everything needs to be ready. The dress may include beading, lace, boning, layers of tulle or a train that needs to move properly throughout the day.

A formal dress can look simple from the outside while several separate layers, seams and structural pieces sit underneath.
A cocktail dress and a wedding gown may both need taking in at the waist, but that is often where the similarity ends. On a wedding gown, the outer fabric, lining, boning and lace may each need separate attention to keep the dress balanced.
Bridesmaid and formal dresses can present different limits. Some are made with very little seam allowance, which affects how far they can be let out. We explain those limits before starting rather than promising a result the garment cannot support.

Timing matters
More lead time means more room to get the details right.
Formal and wedding alterations generally require more planning and more than one fitting.
A wedding gown alteration can take several weeks once the first fitting, detailed work, follow-up fitting and final press are included. Heavy beading, lace, several layers or major resizing can require more time again.
Come in as early as reasonably possible once the dress and event date are confirmed. More time allows the work to be staged properly and gives room for a second look without creating unnecessary pressure close to the day.
An event date should be part of the first conversation, not something added after the work has started.

The most accurate fitting uses the same shoes, undergarments and accessories planned for the event.
Bring your event shoes: Heel height changes the hem, posture and how a train falls.
Wear the planned undergarments: Bras, shapewear and underskirts can significantly change a structured dress.

How far in advance should I book wedding dress alterations?
As early as reasonably possible. A few months is ideal for many gowns, particularly when the dress is layered, beaded, structured or likely to require more than one fitting.
Can a wedding dress be taken in after it has already been fitted once?
Usually, yes, provided there is enough time and the dress construction allows it. We inspect the bodice, seams, lace and structure before confirming the adjustment.

We aim for a consistent finish in areas such as hem length and overall fit, even when dresses were purchased separately. Each garment still needs to be fitted to the individual wearer.

How much do wedding dress alterations cost?
Pricing depends on the dress, number of layers, detailing, construction and fittings required. An in-person assessment gives a far more accurate quote than a general estimate over the phone.
