Curtain alterations · Canning Vale · Perth

Curtains that sit right, not just hang there.

Pooling on the floor, sitting unevenly across the rod, or simply too wide for the window — curtains can usually be adjusted properly rather than replaced.

Curtains and soft furnishings

Off-the-shelf lengths rarely match the window.

Most curtains are made to standard drops, which is why alterations are so common.

Curtains bought off the shelf are made to standard lengths, and most windows are not standard. The result is curtains that pool on the floor, sit too high off the sill, or hang unevenly across a wide window. This is one of the more common jobs that comes through our Canning Vale studio, alongside clothing alterations.

We shorten and occasionally lengthen curtain drops, take in width where a pair is too wide for the rod or track, and adjust heading styles including pinch pleat, eyelet and tab top. Lined curtains take longer than unlined ones, since the lining and outer fabric both need to be handled and often finished separately before being rejoined.

Heavier fabrics such as blockout, velvet or thick weaves need careful handling to keep the finished hem straight and even. We assess the fabric weight and construction before confirming timing and the best approach.

Bring the garment in or message us on WhatsApp and we will give you a straight answer on what is realistic.

What we adjust

Curtain and soft furnishing work we take on.

From a simple drop shorten to more involved width adjustments.

Shortening the drop

The most common request. Curtains hemmed to sit cleanly at the sill, floor or chosen length.

Taking in width

Curtains adjusted where a pair is too wide for the window, rod or track.

Lined curtains

Outer fabric and lining both adjusted so the finished curtain hangs evenly.

Blockout & heavy fabric

Thicker fabrics handled carefully to keep the hem straight and even.

Other soft furnishings

Selected home textile adjustments beyond standard curtains. Ask if you are unsure.

Measuring guide

What to measure before you enquire.

Rough measurements help us give an early estimate, though we will always confirm before starting work.

You do not need exact measurements to enquire. Bring the curtains in, or message us with rough dimensions, and we will confirm the details.

Before you bring them in

A few details that help with curtain work.

These make it easier to quote and plan the job accurately.

Bring both panels of a pair: Curtains are usually altered as a matching pair to keep the length and heading even.

Note the rod or track height: This helps confirm the correct finished drop for the space.

Mention the fabric type: Blockout, sheer, velvet and heavier weaves are handled differently.

Bring the window measurements if possible: This helps us understand how the curtains are meant to sit once altered.

How it works

A clear process for a bulkier job.

Curtains take a different kind of handling to clothing, but the approach is just as careful.

Common questions

What people usually ask about curtain alterations.

Can you shorten curtains that are too long?

Yes. Shortening the drop is one of the most common curtain jobs we do, for both lined and unlined fabric.

Can curtain width be taken in?

Yes. Where a pair of curtains is too wide for the rod or track, the width can usually be adjusted.

Do lined curtains take longer to alter?

Yes. Lined curtains generally take more time because the outer fabric and lining are both adjusted and finished.

Can you alter blockout or heavy curtains?

Yes. Heavier fabrics need careful handling to keep the hem straight, but this is common work for us.

Do I need exact measurements before I enquire?

No. Rough measurements are enough for an initial enquiry. We confirm exact details before starting.

Can eyelet or pinch pleat curtains be shortened?

Yes. The heading style is factored into how the curtain is shortened so the pleats or eyelets sit correctly at the new length.

Do you alter other soft furnishings besides curtains?

We can assist with selected home soft furnishings. Ask us with the details and we will confirm if it is something we can help with.

How much does curtain alteration cost?

Pricing depends on the fabric, lining, width and amount of work required. Message us and measurements on WhatsApp for an estimate.
